Deadline looms for Producer Compliance Schemes
June 16th is the deadline for WEEE producer compliance schemes to submit their final evidence to meet their members' obligations, but there is still uncertainty whether a number of the schemes can obtain enough evidence to meet their obligations in time to reach this deadline.
Electrolink, who holds contracts with more civic amenity sites than any other scheme, has a large amount of surplus evidence. This surplus needs to be sold to other schemes that still require evidence to fulfill their obligations. For the system to work as intended these schemes must now buy evidence from Electrolink to comply with the law.
The Environment Agency has already extended the deadline from the 1st June to the 16th. It is not certain what will happen if the schemes concerned to not agree to buy surplus evidence from Electrolink. However, BERR has warned that schemes that do not meet their obligation will face vigorous enforcement action.
It is the opinion of DARP that if any action is to be taken, it should happen as soon as possible after the deadline. Further delays are only going to create a lack of creditability to the entire regulations and the government’s ability to enforce it.
